I am a mother to two beautiful and capable young ladies. My hope is to instill in them the importance of equity and inclusion by spreading kindness and empathy. I am a first-generation Mexican American immigrant and have lived in the Fresno area for over 20 years. In my spare time I enjoy baking, daydreaming about the beach, drinking iced coffee, and watching British dramas.
I was sitting in my living room one day watching a YouTube video depicting homelessness and the harsh realities of menstruating while homeless. It was explicit about the struggles and inequities of access to menstrual products. I am ashamed to admit it, but it took watching that video for me to realize that people get their periods whether they have a home or not. An uncomfortable feeling stirred up in me. “I have to do something!” I thought. Once you know menstruators bleed in the streets, you cannot ignore it.
I founded Better Period on December 1, 2018 with a vision to provide period dignity for all. This has been tremendously rewarding work and I hope it continues to raise awareness in our community, provide access to those in need and ultimately change perceptions and stigma around homelessness and menstruation.
Our volunteers are YOU! Our community! We have built partnerships with local organizations that are already doing the work. My biggest supporters are my family and my sisters. They believe in the mission of Better Period and in our community. This simply would not be possible without them.
